Gender, socioeconomic class, nationality, geography. Individual interests, income, style, age, sexual preference, level of education. Imposed distinctions or ontologically traceable inevitabilities? If the obvious categories are abandoned, or whittled to near non-existence, what is left? Can an individual successfully navigate the spaces between the buckets into which we so readily throw ourselves and each other?
My work reaches into my qualial dictionary - visual records of my reactions to tensions inherent in the existence of opposition between even the most quotidian facets of my life. I try to find a place to call Home and yet I rail against movements, organizations, categories, labels. I find myself appalled by the sale of neatly packaged solutions offering ideological salvation from those very tensions without which, I believe, much of our individual realities would simply collapse.
